On April 8, 2016, Lt. Col. William A. Schroeder, age 39, was tragically killed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas. Schroeder, a dedicated father and highly respected commander of the 342nd Training Squadron, was fatally wounded while protecting his first sergeant from an armed individual. The assailant, identified as Technical Sergeant Steven D. Bellino, a former FBI agent, shot Schroeder before turning the weapon on himself. The incident was characterized as a murder-suicide.
