Schroeder, a dedicated father and highly respected commander of the 342nd Training Squadron, was fatally wounded while protecting his first sergeant from an armed individual. The assailant, identified as Technical Sergeant Steven D. Bellino, a former FBI agent, shot Schroeder before turning the weapon on himself.

Schroeder, a native of Ames, Iowa, was known for his calm demeanor, patience, and genuine concern for his subordinates. He was posthumously awarded the Airman's Medal for his heroic act.
