On March 10, 2023, at approximately 4:16 p.m., the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 180 block of Doe Trail Road in Lumberton, North Carolina. The victim, 46-year-old Christopher M. Chavis, was transported to UNC Health Southeastern by a neighbor but succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested two individuals in connection with Chavis's death.
On March 22, 2023, 43-year-old William Brian Mayers and 33-year-old Anna M. Morales, both residents of Lumberton, were taken into custody. They were charged with first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, and altering, stealing, or destroying evidence. Both suspects were held without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center.
The arrests followed a thorough investigation by the Robeson County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or the relationship between the suspects and the victim.
