On June 19, 2023, 18-year-old Doriane RaShawn McRae was fatally shot outside Biggs Park Mall in Lumberton, North Carolina. As McRae was leaving the mall with another individual, assailants waiting in the parking lot opened fire, striking him. Emergency responders transported McRae to UNC Health Southeastern, where he succumbed to his injuries. No other individuals were reported injured during the incident.
In the course of the investigation, two individuals were initially detained following a pursuit that ended on Interstate 95 north of Saint Pauls. However, authorities later determined they were not connected to the shooting. The driver, a 17-year-old male, faced charges related to the pursuit and was placed in a juvenile detention center, while the passenger, a 26-year-old, was released without charges.
Subsequently, on June 26, 2023, law enforcement arrested 18-year-old Tony Junior Miller of Lumberton in connection with McRae's death. Miller was charged with first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, injury to real property, and discharging a firearm within city limits. He was apprehended after North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers located a white Honda Accord he occupied near Rennert Road and N.C. 301. Miller was taken into custody and held at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding McRae's death remains ongoing.
