On March 17, 2023, 19-year-old Toney Ahmad "Tank" Gainey of Wadesboro, North Carolina, tragically lost his life. Deputies responded to reports of a traffic accident near Airport Road in Wadesboro and discovered Gainey suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries.
Gainey was a senior at Anson High School, known for his athletic prowess and infectious smile.
As an active player on the Anson High Varsity Football team, he earned the 2A Rocky River All-Conference Honor Award and the Most Improved Player of the Year Award during his senior year. His untimely death left the community in mourning, with many remembering him as a respectful young man who could light up any room.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Anson County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina Highway Patrol, launched a thorough investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of three individuals: 19-year-old Richard Jamile Ennis, 18-year-old Taqual Hakeem McCants, both from Wadesboro, and a juvenile. All three were charged with murder in connection to Gainey's death. Sheriff Scott Howell acknowledged the dedication of the officers involved, noting that some worked 12 to 16-hour days to bring the suspects into custody.
The arrests provided some solace to Gainey's grieving family. His mother, Sherri Denise Allen, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of her son, emphasizing his positive influence on others and his aspirations beyond Anson County. The community's outpouring of memories and support has been a source of comfort during this difficult time.
Gainey's funeral service was held on March 25, 2023, at Smith’s Memorial Chapel in Wadesboro, followed by interment at Flat Rock 52 Memorial Gardens. The community continues to honor his memory, reflecting on the impact he had during his short life.
