On July 16, 2023, at approximately 2:16 a.m., officers from the Wadesboro Police Department responded to Atrium Health Anson, where 26-year-old Randal Vontray Sturdivant Jr. had arrived with a gunshot wound. Despite medical efforts, Sturdivant was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Investigators determined that the shooting occurred near the 300 block of Myrtlewood Drive in Wadesboro, North Carolina.
Subsequent inquiries identified 23-year-old Devonte Amor Horne as a suspect in the case. On July 18, 2023, an arrest warrant was issued for Horne, charging him with first-degree murder. At the time, Horne remained at large, and authorities considered him armed and dangerous.
Randal, affectionately known as "RJ," was born on June 18, 1997, to Randal Sturdivant and Delvonne Little. He graduated from Anson High School and was eagerly anticipating the birth of his son, Jamarion Vontray Sturdivant. RJ was known for his playful spirit, love for pranks, and deep affection for his family. Funeral services for RJ were held on July 29, 2023, at the Leavitt Funeral Home Chapel, followed by interment at West Deep Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The community mourned the loss of a young life filled with promise and potential.
