On April 4, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a reported shooting in the 9500 block of Lucy Jane Lane, located in southeast Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 28-year-old Illya Damont Armstead Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Despite emergency medical efforts, Armstead was pronounced dead at the scene.
