On April 13, 2023, 17-year-old Keydren Z'mari Pettiford was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds in an abandoned mobile home on Carter Avenue in Durham, North Carolina. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Pettiford, affectionately known as "Ka$h," had been enrolled at Hillside High School before transferring out in July 2022. His family noted that he was involved in the Job Corps and was preparing to return to classes to complete his education.
In the months following the incident, the Durham Police Department conducted an extensive investigation into Pettiford's death. By October 2023, authorities charged 17-year-old Naviair Joiner in connection with Pettiford's murder. Joiner also faced charges related to two other shootings involving minors earlier that year. One of these incidents occurred on April 8, 2023, involving a 14-year-old girl who sustained serious injuries and required weeks of hospitalization. The other shooting took place in January 2023 on Avon Lake Drive, involving another juvenile victim.
