On April 26, 2023, at approximately 4:45 p.m., deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting near Kincaid Drive and Ted Court, off Highway 48 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 37-year-old Desmond Lamar Sloan, a resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, deceased in the front seat of an SUV. The initial investigation confirmed that Sloan had been fatally shot.
Following a thorough investigation, authorities arrested 41-year-old Robin Lee Jeffrey of Roanoke Rapids on May 3, 2023. Jeffrey was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Sloan's death and was held without bond pending a court appearance scheduled for May 24, 2023.
In addition to Jeffrey's arrest, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office sought 28-year-old Javon Antonio Sessons, also known as "Woo-Woo," of Roanoke Rapids. Sessons faced charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, related to events that occurred after Sloan's homicide. Authorities noted that Sessons was known to frequent areas around Carolina Rest Home and Highway 48.
As of the latest available information, the investigation remained active, with the possibility of additional arrests. The Halifax County Sheriff's Office continued to encourage anyone with information about the case or the whereabouts of Sessons to contact Halifax County Crime Stoppers.
