On the evening of April 29, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., 40-year-old Richard Callander was fatally shot in a drive-by incident outside his residence at 601 Ghent Street in Windsor, North Carolina. He was among a group of people when multiple shots were fired from a passing vehicle. Another individual, identified as Derrick Vaughan, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
This tragic event marked the sixth gun-related fatality in Bertie County since the beginning of 2023, highlighting a concerning rise in local gun violence. In response, Callander's family, particularly his children, have publicly called for an end to such violence, emphasizing the profound personal loss and community impact.
The Windsor Police Department, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, launched an investigation into the shooting.
