On April 29, 2023, at approximately 11:53 p.m., Clinton Police Department officers responded to a report of gunfire near the intersection of Sampson and Faison Streets in Clinton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered two brothers, James and Sergio Gamino, suffering from gunshot wounds. James, 30, was found lying in the driveway at 303 Sampson Street, while Sergio, 27, was located on the porch of 315 Sampson Street.
Despite life-saving efforts by police and Sampson EMS, James was pronounced dead at the scene. Sergio was transported to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Investigations revealed that the brothers had engaged in a verbal altercation with an individual near the intersection of Sampson and Faison Streets, which escalated when the suspect opened fire before fleeing the scene. Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old Clinton resident Orentha James McIntyre. McIntyre, a convicted felon with a criminal record in North Carolina dating back to 1999, including traffic and drug convictions, as well as possession of stolen goods, was considered armed and dangerous. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
On May 21, 2023, McIntyre surrendered to authorities at the Sampson County Magistrate’s Office. He was processed on the aforementioned charges and placed in the Sampson County Detention Center without bond. Clinton Police Chief Anthony Davis expressed gratitude to the detectives, citizens who provided information, and the District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
