On May 21, 2023, at approximately 12:10 a.m., Lumberton Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting on Washington Street in Lumberton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 43-year-old Benny Smith Jr. lying deceased in the roadway, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
