On June 10, 2023, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Winston-Salem police responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Ashley Crossing and Morgan Circle. Upon arrival, officers discovered 16-year-old Trevon Mitchell, of Kernersville, lying in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Mitchell's 19-year-old brother, Nassia Winfrey, was also present, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg; he was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
