On June 10, 2023, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Winston-Salem police responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Ashley Crossing and Morgan Circle. Upon arrival, officers discovered 16-year-old Trevon Mitchell, of Kernersville, lying in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Mitchell's 19-year-old brother, Nassia Winfrey, was also present, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg; he was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigations revealed that Mitchell had been visiting his brother at a nearby apartment. The two siblings left the apartment to meet someone in the parking lot when unknown assailants began shooting, striking both brothers. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. Evidence suggested that Mitchell was the intended target of the attack.
In the months following the incident, the Winston-Salem Police Department continued their investigation into Mitchell's death. On October 27, 2023, a juvenile suspect was arrested and charged with felony murder in connection to the shooting. Subsequently, on November 7, 2023, a second juvenile suspect was apprehended and similarly charged with felony murder. Due to their ages, the identities of the suspects have not been disclosed.
Authorities have indicated that multiple individuals may have witnessed the shooting and continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
