On July 17, 2023, at approximately 9:40 p.m., 40-year-old Reynaldo Rivera was fatally shot during a home invasion at the Heatherwood Trace Apartments on Paces Glen Avenue in east Charlotte, North Carolina. A second victim, a 23-year-old male, sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) launched an immediate investigation into the incident.
On July 24, 2023, 22-year-old Theopolis Raquan Martin surrendered to authorities and was charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and attempted murder.
Subsequent developments led to the arrest of two additional suspects. On August 8, 2023, 33-year-old Henry Cornejo was apprehended following his release from the hospital. Later, on August 19, 2023, 25-year-old Anthony Jamison Martin Jr. was taken into custody by CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. Both individuals faced charges including first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The arrests provided some measure of relief to Rivera's family and the local community, who had been seeking justice for the tragic loss. The case underscores the persistent challenges posed by violent crime in Charlotte and highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies to apprehend those responsible.
