In the early hours of July 23, 2023, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Durham police responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire in the 1100 block of Holloway Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 28-year-old Brandon Lamar Wiggins suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported Wiggins to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, on August 2, 2023, authorities arrested 45-year-old Durham resident, Corey Juan Pettiford, in connection with Wiggins' death. Pettiford was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and resisting a public officer. He is currently held in the Durham County Jail without bond.
