Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk, a 19-year-old Marine, tragically lost his life on October 18, 2023, in a shooting incident at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Born on May 22, 2004, in Camp Lejeune, Schwenk was raised in Painesville Township, Ohio, and graduated from Riverside High School in 2022. Following in his father's footsteps, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June 2022, aspiring to gain discipline and leadership skills for his future endeavors.
Schwenk served as an electro-optical ordnance repairer with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, responsible for maintaining night vision devices and missile electronics.
On the evening of October 18, Schwenk was found with a fatal gunshot wound in a barracks room at Camp Lejeune. Base law enforcement apprehended a fellow Marine at approximately 10:15 p.m., suspecting involvement in Schwenk's death. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) launched a homicide investigation into the incident. Subsequent reports identified the suspect as Corporal Jesse T. Bopp, who faced multiple charges, including murder and violations of lawful general orders related to the possession and discharge of a weapon on base. Bopp was held in pre-trial confinement, with court-martial proceedings scheduled for November 2024.
Schwenk's untimely death deeply affected both his local community in Ohio and the Marine Corps family. His high school alma mater, Riverside Local Schools, expressed profound condolences, remembering him as a tremendous young man who would be greatly missed. A dignified transfer of his remains was conducted at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, followed by funeral services in Mentor, Ohio. The ongoing investigation and forthcoming legal proceedings aim to bring clarity and justice to this tragic event, as family, friends, and fellow Marines continue to mourn the loss of a dedicated serviceman.
