On January 17, 2024, 21-year-old Isaiah Johnson of Shelby, North Carolina, was fatally shot in Catawba County. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Dublin Drive in the Springdale community, west of Newton. Deputies from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and found Johnson inside a car outside a residence, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Family members reported that Johnson had been visiting his younger teenage brother at the time.
According to their accounts, the teenager accidentally shot Johnson while they were inside the car. Neighbors recalled hearing a disturbance and, upon investigation, discovered Johnson lying in the driveway near the vehicle.
Isaiah Johnson was remembered as a spiritual and fun-loving individual with an infectious laugh. A 2020 graduate of Shelby High School, he was known for his respectfulness and love for family and friends. He worked at both Walmart Distribution and Applebee's, and had a passion for skateboarding, Marvel characters, and sports, particularly as a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Duke Blue Devils.
As of the latest reports, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office was consulting with the District Attorney's Office to determine whether any charges would be filed. Due to the involvement of a juvenile, specific details were withheld from the public.
