On February 1, 2024, at approximately 1:15 a.m., 17-year-old Melakah Ajani Corbette was fatally shot on Pitts Drive near L.C. Coleman Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Corbette with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Corbette was a student at Julius L.
Chambers High School and had recently signed with a modeling agency in New York, with plans to pursue modeling opportunities.
Following an investigation, CMPD arrested a 16-year-old suspect on March 9, 2024. The juvenile, whose identity has not been disclosed due to age, was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. The suspect was placed in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
In April 2024, a court determined that the 16-year-old suspect would be tried as an adult. Consequently, the suspect, identified as Christopher Butler, was transferred to the adult court system in Mecklenburg County and held on a $300,000 secured bond.
The tragic death of Melakah Corbette underscores the pressing issue of youth violence in Charlotte. CMPD reported a significant increase in juvenile suspects involved in violent crimes, with a 34% rise in arrests and a 33% increase in underage individuals implicated in shootings compared to the previous year.
As the community mourns the loss of a promising young individual, the legal proceedings against the accused continue, highlighting the ongoing challenges of addressing and preventing youth involvement in violent activities.
