Scott Allen Brooks, a 61-year-old white male, was tragically shot and killed on December 9, 2019, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Scott was the co-owner of Brooks' Sandwich House, a beloved local eatery known for its burgers, hot dogs, and chili. On the morning of his death, Scott was opening the restaurant when he was confronted by an unknown, armed individual. Despite efforts by officers and medical personnel, Scott succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department launched an investigation into the murder, but initially, there were no known motives or arrests. The community was deeply affected by the loss, with many expressing their grief and support for Scott's family. A makeshift memorial of flowers and cards grew outside the restaurant, and a GoFundMe campaign was started to help cover funeral expenses and support Scott's family.
As the investigation progressed, CMPD identified Terry Conner Jr., a 33-year-old male, as a suspect in the case. On March 4, 2020, Terry was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the CMPD's Homicide Unit detectives and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, who worked with the SWAT Team to locate and apprehend Terry.
The community continued to mourn Scott's loss, with a candlelight vigil held in his honor and numerous tributes pouring in from friends, family, and loyal customers. Scott's twin brother, David Brooks, spoke about the impact of his brother's death and the legacy of kindness and generosity that Scott left behind.
