On that evening, at approximately 9:29 PM, David was walking along Statesville Avenue with friends when a vehicle carrying multiple occupants pulled up beside them. A brief exchange of words occurred between the group and the individuals in the car before the vehicle drove away.
However, instead of leaving the scene entirely, the car turned around in a nearby parking lot and headed back toward the group.
As David and his friends continued walking along the shoulder of the road, the vehicle suddenly veered onto the shoulder, striking David and sending him into a ditch. The car continued moving toward the others, but they managed to evade it. After the impact, the vehicle returned to the main road and turned left onto Durham Lane. David was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead due to a severe head injury sustained in the hit-and-run incident.
The suspect vehicle was described as a four-door maroon Mercury Sable with North Carolina license plates. Despite witness accounts, authorities were unable to identify any of the occupants of the vehicle.
