On February 24, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers from the Washington Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of East 8th Street and Charlotte Street in Washington, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they found 52-year-old Eric Lavon Whitney Sr. critically injured from apparent gunshot wounds. A bystander was administering life-saving measures at the scene.
Whitney was promptly transported to ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead due to his injuries.
The ensuing investigation led to the identification of two suspects: 29-year-old Demetrius Antonio Ward and 26-year-old Darrien Demonday Ore. Ward was apprehended and charged with murder; he is currently held without bond at the Beaufort County Detention Center. However, Ore remains at large, and authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of murder. Law enforcement agencies are actively seeking information regarding Ore's whereabouts and urge anyone with knowledge to come forward.
In the wake of Whitney's tragic death, his family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, as he did not have life insurance. The community has shown support through donations and condolences, reflecting the impact of the loss on those who knew him.
A visitation for Eric Lavon Whitney Sr. was held on March 9, 2024, at Paradise Memorial Chapel in Washington, followed by a Celebration of Life and interment at Broad Creek Cemetery in Pantego on March 10, 2024. He is remembered by family and friends for his warm personality and the joy he brought to those around him.
