On March 5, 2024, at approximately 10:58 p.m., the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Downy Road near Rowland, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 17-year-old Kaden Malachi Strickland of Pembroke deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Kaden was a senior at Purnell Swett High School, known for his charismatic smile and well-regarded by peers and faculty.
He enjoyed weightlifting, basketball, and riding four-wheelers, and was employed at Fuller's, following a family tradition.
The investigation led to the arrest of another 17-year-old male, whose identity has been withheld due to his age. He was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a minor, and is currently held at the Cumberland Regional Juvenile Detention Center without bond.

Funeral services were held on March 10, 2024, at God's Holy Assembly Church, where family and friends gathered to honor his memory.
