On March 6, 2024, at approximately 12:50 a.m., the Wadesboro Police Department responded to a call at the Oak Hill Apartment Complex in Wadesboro, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 30-year-old Jamarcus D. Sellers of Rockingham suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Sellers was immediately transported to Atrium Health Anson, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the ensuing investigation, conducted in collaboration with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, authorities swiftly identified 26-year-old Dewon Rayquan Hailey of Wadesboro as the primary suspect. Warrants were promptly issued for Hailey's arrest on charges of First Degree Murder. Despite extensive search efforts, Hailey initially evaded capture, with law enforcement agencies suspecting he might have fled to the Union County area.
After an intensive manhunt spanning multiple jurisdictions, Hailey was apprehended on April 18, 2024, at a residence in Marshville, North Carolina. The operation involved coordinated efforts from several agencies, including the Wadesboro Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Union County Sheriff's Office, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Greensboro Police Department, United States Secret Service, and the Marshville Police Department. Following his arrest, Hailey was placed in the Anson County Jail without bond, awaiting trial for the murder of Jamarcus Sellers.
Wadesboro Police Chief Brandon H. Chewning expressed condolences to Sellers' family and friends, stating, "It saddens me to see such a young vibrant life taken in a senseless act of violence." He also commended the collaborative efforts of the various law enforcement agencies and the community in apprehending the suspect, reaffirming the department's commitment to ensuring safety and justice in the Wadesboro area.
