On the night of May 2, 2024, at approximately 10:44 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 5100 block of Hoover Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old James Chambers III suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt response from emergency medical services, Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the ensuing investigation, CMPD's Homicide Unit worked diligently to identify a suspect. Their efforts led them to 29-year-old Zacharias Lowery. On May 4, 2024, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested Lowery. He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte for questioning. Following the interview, Lowery was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrest brought some measure of closure to the family of James Chambers III, as they were notified promptly after Lowery's apprehension. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the homicide remains active and ongoing, with CMPD encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
