On May 10, 2024, 18-year-old Jovan Nazier Omari Sewell was fatally shot in Shelby, North Carolina. Officers from the Shelby Police Department responded to reports of a shooting just before noon near the intersection of East Warren Street and Chestnut Street. Upon arrival, they found Sewell suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Atrium Health - Cleveland for medical treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
