Upon arrival, they found 56-year-old Tyrone Lee Hicklin suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Emergency Medical Services transported Hicklin to UNC Health Wayne for initial treatment; he was subsequently transferred to ECU Health in Greenville for further care.
Despite medical efforts, Hicklin succumbed to his injuries at approximately 12:30 a.m. on May 26, 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Steele; a son, TieRea Atkins of Louisiana; and a daughter, TyRhonda Atkins of Wilmington. Funeral services were held on June 7, 2024, at the James T. Haskins Memorial Chapel in Goldsboro, followed by interment at Golden Gate Cemetery in Pikeville.
