On June 5, 2024, at approximately 5:47 p.m., Goldsboro Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1600 block of South John Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Goldsboro resident, Tysher Davis, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency Medical Services transported Davis to UNC Health Wayne for initial treatment; he was later transferred to ECU Health in Greenville for further care.
While managing the scene on South John Street, officers received another call reporting an unresponsive individual in a vehicle in the 300 block of Hollowell Avenue. There, they found 21-year-old Vorteryahj Erasave' Sanders of Dudley, North Carolina, with a fatal gunshot wound. Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that both incidents were connected. Davis and Sanders were acquainted and had engaged in a confrontation prior to the shootings. After consulting with the Wayne County District Attorney's Office, authorities charged Davis with an open count of murder in Sanders' death. On June 21, 2024, Davis surrendered to law enforcement without incident. He was processed at the Wayne County Magistrate’s Office and held without bond at the Wayne County Detention Center, pending his initial court appearance.
