On June 10, 2024, at approximately 4:42 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway 130 in Maxton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 38-year-old Brandon Strickland of Rowland suffering from a gunshot wound. Strickland was immediately transported to UNC Southeastern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation swiftly identified 20-year-old Adrian Locklear of Maxton as the primary suspect in the shooting. On June 12, 2024, Locklear surrendered to Robeson County Sheriff's Office investigators. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Strickland's death and was placed in the custody of the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
Community members have expressed varying perspectives on the incident, with some suggesting that Locklear may have acted in self-defense. However, official details regarding the motive and circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been publicly disclosed, as the investigation remains active.
Brandon Strickland, affectionately known as "Lil B," was born on March 28, 1986, in Robeson County. He was known for his work in sheetrock and had a passion for mechanics, often collaborating with his uncle, Shelton Strickland. Brandon cherished spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughters, Airel Jacobs, Smaya Strickland, Anira Strickland, Zada Dial; his son, Branlon Locklear; and two granddaughters, Skylar Jacobs and Ava Estrada. A memorial service was held on June 24, 2024, at Heritage Funeral Home in Red Springs, North Carolina, where family and friends gathered to honor his memory.
