On the morning of July 19, 2024, at approximately 8 a.m., the Randolph County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at a residence on Pisgah Road in Asheboro, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 34-year-old Daniel John Jarrell suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Jarrell succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation quickly identified Jarrell's roommate, 36-year-old Joshua Eric Sanders, as the primary suspect.
Sanders was present at the scene when deputies arrived and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with felony first-degree murder and booked into the Randolph County Detention Center, where he was held without bond. Sanders' initial court appearance was scheduled for July 22, 2024.

He was issued a $30,000 secured bond at that time.
