In the early hours of July 24, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred on Gholson Place in Henderson, North Carolina, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Tabyious Cheek. Authorities responded to a call at approximately 12:39 a.m. after three individuals with gunshot wounds arrived at Maria Parham Hospital. Cheek succumbed to his injuries, while the other two victims—a 19-year-old named Omir Gibbs and a 16-year-old juvenile—were subsequently transferred to Duke Hospital for further treatment.
The Vance County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Henderson Police Department, launched an investigation into the incident. Despite their efforts, as of December 22, 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Vance County Sheriff's Office or Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers to assist in solving the case.
In the wake of his passing, Cheek's family and friends mourned his loss. He is survived by his father, Tyrone Yancey; his brother, Ranequan Cheek; and his maternal grandmother, Joyce Cheek, all of Henderson. Funeral services were held on August 5, 2024, at Wright Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial in Blacknall Cemetery.
The community continues to seek closure and justice for Cheek's untimely death. Local law enforcement remains committed to investigating the case, encouraging residents to come forward with any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for the shooting.
