On September 14, 2024, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Henderson Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting at 1126 Maple Street in Henderson, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 40-year-old Romids A. Miles with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police officers and Vance County Sheriff's Deputies, Miles was transported to a medical facility where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Another individual, 38-year-old Sylvester Deon Burton, was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to a nearby medical facility and was listed in stable condition.
Investigations revealed that a prior physical altercation between Miles and 33-year-old Darius Donzell Harris likely led to the shooting. Around 4:20 a.m., officers learned that Harris was seeking treatment at Granville Medical Center for injuries related to the incident. Upon his release, Harris was taken into custody by the Henderson Police Department, charged with the murder of Romids A. Miles, and transported to the Vance County Detention Center after being denied bond.
