On the night of May 16, 2025, in Gary, Indiana, the life of 20-year-old Chasity Shorter was tragically cut short. Authorities responded to a call at approximately 11:22 p.m. and discovered a grim scene at an apartment complex on Clark Road. Inside, they found Chasity, who was four months pregnant, and a man, later identified as 21-year-old Brice Taylor of Hammond, both deceased.
An autopsy confirmed that Chasity Shorter died from gunshot wounds, and her death was officially ruled a
homicide. Brice Taylor also died from a gunshot wound, and his death was determined to be a suicide. The tragic event is being investigated by the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Unit as an apparent murder-suicide.
Chasity Michelle Shorter was born on July 13, 2004, in Merrillville, Indiana. Described as a bright spirit to those who knew her, she had aspirations of becoming a medical assistant. More than anything, she was eagerly anticipating the birth of her baby boy and dreamed of being a wife and mother. Family and friends were left to mourn the unexpected and violent loss of a young woman on the brink of starting her own family.
