On the morning of September 24, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Lumberton Police officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Royal Inn, located at 2333 Lackey Street in Lumberton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Joseph Carter suffering from a gunshot wound. Carter was treated at the scene and transported to UNC Health Southeastern, where he succumbed to his injuries.
