In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 25, 2023, a burst of violence at the intersection of East 179th Street and Mapes Avenue in the Bronx claimed the life of 34-year-old Darnell Johnson. Responding to a 911 call at approximately 3:07 a.m., police discovered Johnson with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
Another man, aged 33, was also wounded in the shooting, sustaining a
gunshot to his right arm. He was taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital in stable condition. Initial reports from the New York Police Department indicated that the investigation was ongoing, with no immediate arrests made as they appealed to the public for any information regarding the incident. Johnson was a resident of the Wakefield section of the Bronx.
In the days that followed the shooting, the NYPD identified 28-year-old Sherard Wadlington, a resident of the Bronx, as a suspect in the case. Wadlington was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation continued as authorities worked to understand the motive behind the shooting and any potential connections between the suspect and the victims.
