A holiday weekend gathering turned into a scene of tragedy in St. Albans, Queens, when a dispute over food at a family barbecue escalated to fatal violence. On the evening of May 27, 2023, 25-year-old Chevaughn Millings, a Black male, was shot and killed inside a home on Pineville Lane. The argument began over payment for the chicken being served at the family gathering.
The dispute involved Millings and his uncle, Durran Morgan.
After Millings and another guest pushed Morgan out of a side door, Morgan re-entered the house through the front door, drew a handgun, and shot his nephew multiple times in the abdomen and legs. Millings was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. During the incident, Millings' 20-year-old niece was also shot and wounded; she was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Following the shooting, the suspect, Durran Morgan, who was 38 at the time, fled the scene in a white Mercedes SUV. He later traveled to Georgia but eventually returned to New York and surrendered to authorities on June 4, 2023. Morgan was subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Another individual, 45-year-old Quaneisha Wilkins, was also arrested and faced similar charges, accused of acting in concert with Morgan.
In November 2025, a jury convicted Durran Morgan of murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching a verdict. In December 2025, a Queens Supreme Court Justice sentenced Morgan to 50 years to life in prison for the killing of his nephew and the assault on his niece.
