On September 4, 2023, during the festivities following the West Indian American Day Parade in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, 51-year-old Malik Muhammad was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. on Sterling Place near Schenectady Avenue, approximately three blocks from the parade route. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and described the attack as deliberate. One witness recounted, "They gave him everything. They made sure he was dead."
