In the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a burst of gunfire shattered the late afternoon calm on Thursday, May 18, 2023, leaving a 59-year-old man named Pernell Webster fatally wounded. The shooting occurred at approximately 4:05 p.m. inside the NYCHA Saratoga Houses development on Saratoga Avenue. Webster, a male resident of the area who lived just a few blocks away, was discovered on the 13th floor of the building with gunshot wounds to his arm and torso.

responders rushed to the scene and transported Webster to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
