A long-simmering dispute over noise between neighbors in a Brooklyn apartment building culminated in the tragic death of 47-year-old Bladimy Mathurin. The fatal encounter, which also claimed the life of his 27-year-old stepson, Chinwai Mode, unfolded on a Sunday night, forever altering the lives of their family. Mathurin, a school bus driver, was a husband and father to four children.
The conflict with his downstairs neighbor, 47-year-old Jason Pass, had reportedly been ongoing for years, with multiple noise complaints filed.
The tensions reached a breaking point on October 29, 2023. Surveillance footage from the hallway of their East Flatbush apartment building captured the horrific events. The footage shows Pass confronting Mathurin's wife. Shortly after, Mathurin emerges and confronts Pass, holding a pair of scissors. Despite his wife's attempts to pull him away, the argument escalated. Pass then produced a handgun and shot both Mathurin and Mode. After initially shooting both men, Pass returned to shoot a still-struggling Mathurin again at point-blank range before calmly leaving the scene.
In the days following the shooting, the New York Police Department identified Jason Pass as the suspect and launched a manhunt. The search came to a dramatic and violent end when police located Pass. During a traffic stop, Pass emerged from his vehicle and charged at the officers with a knife. In the ensuing confrontation, police shot and killed Pass. The gun used by Pass in the initial shooting was not legally registered.
