In a tragic eruption of domestic violence, 43-year-old Rosa Acevedo, a Hispanic female, and her 26-year-old son, Gustavo Devora Acevedo, were fatally shot in their Brooklyn apartment on the evening of November 17, 2023. The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. at their residence on Louisiana Avenue in the East New York neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered both victims with multiple gunshot wounds.
Rosa Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene, while her son was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The suspect in the double homicide was identified as 52-year-old Luis Collado, who resided with the victims and was in a common-law marriage with Rosa Acevedo. Collado was taken into custody at the scene without incident, and a firearm was recovered. He now faces a litany of charges, including two counts of murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to neighbors and police sources, the tragic events were preceded by a history of threats made by Collado towards Acevedo, often fueled by jealousy. Despite these reported threats, there were no prior documented domestic violence incidents that prompted a police response. The family of Rosa Acevedo described a history of domestic violence and jealousy that ultimately led to the fatal shooting. They are now seeking justice for their loved ones and are making arrangements to have their remains transported to their native Dominican Republic.
