In the Bronx, a verbal altercation over the placement of a bicycle escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of a 30-year-old man, Joseph Johnson. The incident unfolded just before 11 p.m. on May 19, 2024, on Ely Avenue. Johnson had reportedly left his bicycle in the middle of the street, which angered an unknown individual and led to a heated exchange.
According to police, the argument quickly turned violent when an unidentified male told Johnson not to leave his bike in the
street, to which Johnson reportedly retorted he would do as he pleased. Shortly after the verbal dispute, four shots were fired, one of which struck Johnson in the head. He was transported to Jacobi Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A second man, a 40-year-old, was also struck by a bullet in the leg during the incident but was in stable condition.
As of early December 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. The New York City Police Department has identified three suspects and has released descriptions of them to the public in hopes of gathering more information. The first suspect is described as a male with a medium build and complexion, last seen in a navy-blue baseball cap and a navy blue and yellow hooded sweatshirt with matching sweatpants. The second suspect also has a medium build and complexion and was seen wearing a green Nike sweatshirt and black jeans. The third individual is described as having a slim build and a medium complexion, wearing a navy-blue hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
