In the early morning hours of May 17, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Jeremy Valencia was tragically cut short in the Kingsbridge Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. At approximately 6:30 a.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a man shot in front of 3470 Fort Independence Street. Upon arrival, officers found Valencia unconscious and unresponsive, with gunshot wounds to his chest.
A neighbor, who was the first person to find Valencia, heard the gunshots and initially dismissed them
as the usual city noise. However, upon stepping outside, she discovered Valencia bleeding on the street. She checked for a pulse and called 911, noting that he was still alive at that moment. Emergency medical services arrived and transported him to Montefiore Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting, which was the first homicide in the 50th Precinct that year, initially led police to search for two men who were believed to have been involved. The New York Police Department's investigation progressed over the following months, leading to the identification and arrest of two suspects.
In July 2023, authorities made two arrests in connection with Jeremy Valencia's murder. Arsenio Lopez, a 29-year-old from Brooklyn, was taken into custody and charged with murder, manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Shortly after, a second suspect, 27-year-old Luis Joyce of the Bronx, was also arrested. Joyce faced charges of murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a loaded firearm.
