In the early morning hours of what should have been a joyous celebration, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Freeport, New York. Tyrone Williams, a 23-year-old male from Baldwin, was shot and killed on what was reportedly his birthday. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. on August 1, 2024, following a dispute that began at a house party on West Seaman Avenue.
Williams had been celebrating with friends when an argument broke out with another guest, whom police believe he had
not met prior to the party. The altercation escalated and moved outside the residence. According to witness accounts, the argument became physical and continued down the block. It was then that the other man allegedly pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot Williams in the chest. Freeport village police were alerted to the gunfire by a shot spotter activation and responded to the scene near West Seaman Avenue. Officers discovered the wounded Williams, and his friends were attempting to transport him to a hospital. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, an investigation led to the swift arrest of a suspect. Kyzer Langley, a 20-year-old from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrest occurred after police received a call about a suspicious person near West Seaman and Grand avenues at approximately 8:05 a.m. on the same day as the shooting. Officers who responded to the call detained Langley and also found a 9mm handgun on the ground nearby.
Langley was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned at the First District Court in Hempstead. Family and friends of Tyrone Williams, who described him as a high school graduate, a master barber, and an auto mechanic, were present for the court proceedings, overcome with grief. His mother, Monique Anderson, lamented that her only son was killed on his birthday and expressed gratitude for the quick arrest made by the Nassau County police. The investigation into the motive for the argument that led to the deadly shooting is ongoing.
