In the early days of March 2021, the life of Daniel Garcia-Carbajal, an 18-year-old male from Freeport, New York, was tragically cut short. On March 1, 2021, under the guise of meeting girls for a party, he was lured to Cow Meadow Park. Believing he was headed for an afternoon of socializing with friends, Garcia-Carbajal was picked up and driven to the park by several individuals. Once there, he walked into a wooded area with the group where he was shot once in the head.
His body was discovered the following day after a family member had reported him missing.
The investigation into Garcia-Carbajal's death quickly revealed a sinister plot orchestrated by members of the MS-13 street gang. Prosecutors stated that Garcia-Carbajal was targeted because of social media posts he had made that were perceived as disrespectful to the gang. The authorities methodically pieced together the events leading to the murder, resulting in the arrests of several individuals connected to the crime.
Among those apprehended was Kevin Torres, also known as 'Sarco'. Evidence presented during his trial showed his instrumental role in the planning and execution of the murder, as well as his efforts to conceal the crime by burying the murder weapon. In June 2024, a jury found Torres guilty of second-degree murder and conspiracy. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Another key figure, Marvin Moralez, known as 'Little Chucky,' pleaded guilty to his part in the murder. In a separate incident just two weeks after the murder, Moralez was arrested after pointing a loaded gun at a police officer. He accepted a plea deal that resulted in a sentence of 23 years to life in prison for both crimes.
The investigation also led to the arrests of Tulio O. Ayala, Manuel Gomez, and Henry Canales. Ayala and Gomez both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and were awaiting sentencing, having cooperated with the government in the case against Torres. Canales pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and received a ten-year sentence. An additional suspect, Edgardo Caballero, was arrested and charged with conspiracy in connection with the killing. The collective efforts of law enforcement brought multiple perpetrators to justice for the calculated and brutal murder of Daniel Garcia-Carbajal.
