In the early morning hours of January 31, 2023, the life of 34-year-old Todd Bishop Jr. was tragically cut short in the community of Berkeley, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Responding to a call of shots fired on the 8000 block of Busiek Avenue at approximately 3:46 a.m., Berkeley Police officers discovered Bishop lying in his mother's front yard with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly taken over by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, a regional team of detectives. Their efforts soon focused on a neighbor, 22-year-old Jalen Black. According to reports, a search of Black's residence, located next door to where Bishop was found, yielded shell casings that matched those recovered at the scene. Investigators also discovered a Glock handgun, which ballistic analysis later confirmed was the weapon used in the shooting.
Following the discovery of the evidence, Jalen Black was taken into custody. After being read his Miranda rights, he admitted to investigators that he had shot at Bishop. Subsequently, Black was formally charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Todd Bishop Jr.'s death. A judge set his bond at $1 million, cash-only.
