On Sunday, March 5, 2023, the life of 22-year-old male Scott Russell Jones came to a sudden end during a stop for food in St. Francois County, Missouri. Jones, a resident of Fenton, was seated in the front of a vehicle waiting in the drive-thru line of a Jack in the Box restaurant located on North Desloge Drive in Desloge. While the group waited for their order around 8:00 a.m., a firearm was being handled by a passenger in the back seat.
The weapon, identified as a 9mm handgun, belonged
to 25-year-old Kyle Christopher Walters of Dittmer, Missouri, who was sitting directly behind Jones. According to reports from the Desloge Police Department, the gun accidentally discharged inside the vehicle. The bullet traveled through the back of the driver's seat and struck Jones in the back. Despite the arrival of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 8:00 a.m.
Authorities investigated the shooting and determined it was unintentional, leading to the arrest of Walters. He was subsequently charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter for his role in the fatal incident. Walters appeared in St. Francois County Court where he entered a guilty plea to the charge on October 27, 2023. Although he initially faced a seven-year prison term, the sentence was suspended, and he was ordered to serve five years of supervised probation.
