In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in July 2023, tragedy struck at a BP gas station in Saint-Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 22-year-old Iyaz Ahmed. A male of Bangladeshi descent, Ahmed was working his overnight shift as a clerk, a job he held while pursuing a degree in computer science at a local community college with dreams of one day owning his own business.
Surveillance footage from the gas station on Hampton Avenue suggests that the fatal encounter began when Ahmed
noticed multiple individuals attempting to break into his car, which was parked at a gas pump in front of the store. It is believed that he went outside to confront them. During this confrontation, he was shot in the head. First responders arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. and transported Ahmed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The St. Louis police investigation into the homicide is ongoing as they search for three suspects in connection with the shooting. Early in the investigation, a 19-year-old was identified as a person of interest, but he was later cleared of any involvement in the murder. To date, no arrests have been made in the case. Ahmed's family, including his aunt who had helped him immigrate to the United States from Bangladesh during his teenage years after his father's passing, remembers him as a kind, calm, and supportive young man with a bright future ahead of him. His final rites were planned to take place in New York.
