The Hispanic teenager Angel Macias, also referred to in some reports as Angel Hacias, was fifteen years old when his life was cut short following a violent incident in the summer of 2023. On the evening of July 23, a Sunday, officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the Lykins neighborhood after receiving reports of gunfire. Around 6:30 p.m., responding units arrived at the 3700 block of East 8th Street, where they discovered a chaotic scene on the sidewalk.
Two young males had been struck by bullets, leaving the community and law enforcement to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
At the scene, emergency responders found sixteen-year-old Adan Morales-Alvarado unresponsive, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital, marking an immediate and somber loss for the neighborhood. Beside him, Angel Macias was found in critical condition, clinging to life. He was rushed to a local hospital where medical teams worked to stabilize him. For nearly two weeks, Macias fought to recover from his injuries, but his condition ultimately deteriorated. He was pronounced dead late in the morning on August 4, 2023, becoming the second fatality of the double shooting.
Detectives from the Kansas City Police Department launched a homicide investigation immediately following the discovery of the victims. In the initial weeks, investigators canvassed the area and spoke with concerned citizens who had directed officers to the injured teens. By early August, police stated they had identified a person of interest in connection with the double homicide and were collaborating with the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office to determine potential charges. At that time, authorities noted they were not actively searching for other suspects, suggesting a focused scope for their inquiry.
