On November 13, 2023, the quiet of a late afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri, was shattered by the sound of gunfire on the 4200 block of East 56th Street. Residents and family members inside a home near the intersection of 56th and Jackson were alerted to the danger when shots rang out just outside. Among those inside was Kechell Hill, who rushed to the front yard alongside her mother to find her 18-year-old brother, Joseph Hill, lying unresponsive on the ground.
The young man had been
standing in front of his great-grandparents' home, where he had lived for much of his life, when he was struck by bullets. His family, including his great-grandfather who had just returned from a nearby store upon hearing the commotion, attempted to render aid. Despite their desperate efforts and the subsequent arrival of emergency medical crews who transported him to a local hospital, Joseph succumbed to his injuries. He had been shot in the ribs and suffered internal bleeding, marking the city's 163rd homicide of that year.
Joseph had recently reached a turning point in his life, having graduated from high school earlier that summer through the Division of Youth Services. He had expressed a strong desire to avoid further trouble with the law and had aspirations of joining the military, following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, with an ultimate goal of becoming a nurse. He was described by his twin sister as a 'goofy' and protective sibling who loved to make people laugh and had a talent for singing.
In the wake of the shooting, investigators from the Kansas City Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Detectives canvassed the area and initially took two subjects of interest into custody for questioning. However, these individuals were released pending further investigation, and no formal charges were immediately filed.
