On the early morning of November 21, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 36-year-old male Terrell Lamont Cunningham. Residents in the area were disturbed shortly after 3:00 a.m. when gunfire erupted within an apartment building located in the 5700 block of South Broadway. Cunningham, who resided on Coburg Lands Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors, was discovered at the scene having sustained lethal gunshot wounds.
The
circumstances leading to the violence involved a confrontation with the building's property manager, 48-year-old Shane C. Richmond. Richmond told investigators that he had entered the building to investigate a noise coming from a vacant unit where he encountered Cunningham. According to Richmond’s initial account to law enforcement, he discharged his weapon after Cunningham allegedly made aggressive comments and began to move toward him. However, a witness present during the incident contradicted this narrative, reporting that Richmond opened fire immediately upon entering the room and that Cunningham never had the opportunity to stand up before being shot.
Following the investigation, police arrested Shane C. Richmond in connection with the homicide. Prosecutors subsequently filed charges against him, including first-degree murder and armed criminal action. At the time of the reports, Richmond was ordered to be held in custody without bond as the legal proceedings commenced to address the conflicting accounts of the deadly encounter.
