On April 16, 2024, a violent sequence of events unfolded at a QuikTrip gas station in the 10700 block of West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson, Missouri, resulting in the death of 26-year-old Detarius Haynes. At approximately 1:30 a.m., Haynes arrived at the convenience store in a white Ford Escape accompanied by 18-year-old Joshua Campbell. Both men entered the store to make purchases before returning to the vehicle.
Haynes, who was driving, then moved the SUV to the gas pumps and stopped.
While the vehicle was stationary at the pumps, Joshua Campbell produced a firearm and shot Detarius Haynes. Haynes collapsed near the gas pump, where he would later be pronounced dead. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators, though police noted that the two men arrived in the same vehicle and appeared to know each other.
A 37-year-old Ferguson police officer, who was inside the store at the time, exited the business and heard the gunfire. The officer observed Campbell shooting at Haynes and immediately intervened. The officer issued verbal commands which were ignored, leading him to discharge his service weapon, striking Campbell. The 18-year-old suspect fled towards West Florissant Avenue but collapsed a short distance away. Campbell was also pronounced dead at the scene. As the suspect died during the commission of the crime, there were no arrests or subsequent criminal trials connected to the case.
