On the night of May 21, 2024, 15-year-old Dornae La’Shay Hayes was fatally shot in the head while on the rear porch of an apartment building in the 2700 block of Miami Street, located in St. Louis's Gravois Park neighborhood. The incident occurred around 11 p.m., and police were alerted by the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system. Dornae was found unconscious and not breathing; she was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
